We're a rather well-read lot, right?

I'm at forty-five...it should be forty-seven by the time I'm done with the semester.

It's a bit taxing to go through and count, but I'm curious as to see how many of these everyone has read, so consider it a contest or something.

I had to go through the list in three parts! I don't have the time for stuff like that! Who wrote that list anyway? And why do they get to decide what books we need to read before we die?

  2. Some guy named Peter Boxall compiled the list...I dunno what his qualifications are, though. Here's the book:

  3. Oh...that said, I don't agree with a lot of the list. For example- the pre-1600 list? Where the eff is Shakespeare? And Sophocles? And the frickin' Odyssey??

  4. I agree there are a lot of holes. Also, some things on the list (such as Story of O) are very good, but I am not sure I would classify as "must read before you die". The list has the feel of something compiled from a personal library.

  5. eaggie- I watched Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa video and a few others and I found Vampire Weekend entertaining. I like the 80's/90's/Beatles thing thing they have going on.

  6. I read 26.

Thumbs down. He has Native Son twice, which invalidates the premise of "1001 Books..." and confirms the hypothesis of self-strokery.

  7. Oh, nevermind about native son. But the list is still bogus.

1001 is too many to "Read before you die ". That phrase suggests an urgency that just doesn't match the length of the list.

  8. I'm well into the 200's, and I've only read two. I don't like this game.

  9. I started from the bottom of the list. It pissed me off less that way.

  11. The list of books written in the 2000s and 1900s is good, but you're right- it does seem like he just took the books off of his shelf and said, "everyone needs to read these books." I looked at the one for movies- it's pretty much crap, too.

BTW, has anyone read East of Eden? I'm reading it right now and it's amazing.

  12. I like East of Eden.

But it is not on the list.

I suppose it is a rip off of some Bible stories.
